For example, not all nurses work on the ward. Some work in the community, while other work in research, teaching and management. Nurses can also take further training to prescribe medicine, perform surgery or be a public health leaders. • Pay in NHS is better than you think. 2. What do nurses do in the NHS? • Newly qualified nurses all work as part of a team and provide direct patient care. They work in a variety of settings, including hospital wards, operating theaters, schools, prisons, clinics, doctors’ surgery and patients’ home. • As you career progresses, you can specialize in areas such as theater nursing or practice nursing, while others undertake further post graduate studies to become more senior nurses such as distinct nurses, health visitors or advance clinical practitioners. 3. How do I register as a nurse in the UK? • To become a nurse in the UK, you will need to register with the NMC (Nursing Midwifery Council). This applies to all nurses, including General Nurses, Mental Health Nurses and Midwives. What is a Band and why are there different numbers? • The NHS uses pay scales called Band. Each Band represent a level of experience and the salary for every Band will differ. • Every year, the NHS pay scales are being reviewed. The scales are uniform for every NHS organization throughout the UK. 5. What is the recruitment process like? • Any international nurses wishing to start a career in the UK will go through the following: • Take the IELTS UKVI Academic and achieve a pass level of 7 or take the OET and pass with grade B • Complete SKYPE interview with the NHS hospital • Receive an offer letter from the hospital following a successful interview • Start your registration with the NMC and arrange to take the CBT(Computer Based Teast) • Send the required documents to the NMC and receive a decision letter • Receive your Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) and apply for your tier 2 visa • Have a flight booked for travel to UK • Arrive in the UK and begin working in the NHS as a Band 4 nurse • Take the OSCE (Object Structured Clinical Examination) 6. Do I pay a fee to OMRA-Oracle Overseas Manpower Recruitment Agency? • No, we do not collect any placement fee, our services are free of charge to you as we are paid by the hospital that work with us. However, you may charged for extra services and requirements. 8. How long do I have to commit to my job in the UK? • Overseas Nurses are required to commit to their position within the NHS Trust for at least three years, which is also the visa duration. 9. Will I be given accommodation in the UK? • You will be provided with 2-3 months free accommodation with the Trust, which would only be for Nurses and not their families. • The full 2-3 months accommodation is typically credited into your bank account by the hospital, and you will be responsible for financing your accommodation with this money. Following your first 2-3 months in free accommodation, you may choose to stay and start paying a monthly rent. Should you wish to move to somewhere new, you will need to find your own accommodation. 10. What happen if I want to work in another hospital after I arrive? • If you are an EEA National it is easy to move hospitals, however you should complete the time you committed to. For Overseas Nurses your new employer would have to sponsor your work permit and visa. 11. Who will pay for my fight to the UK? • Typically, the Trust will pay for/pay towards your initial flight to the UK. However, Trusts will differ in their benefits packages, so speak to your recruitment consultant about what is on offer to you. 12. Do I need a visa to work in the UK? • Unless you are an EU National, you will need a visa or a work permit to work in the UK. • When applying for an NHS nursing job, the Trust can offer sponsorship to obtain a Tiera 2 visa. • After passing the CBT, you will be issued with a Certificate of sponsorship (COS), which you will need for applying for your visa. Depending on which Trust you are joining, they may cover the cost of visa for you in full or in part. 13. Can I Bring my family to the UK with me? • Yes, but their accommodation and visas will depend on which Trust you are joining. Some Trusts will provide accommodation for you family but will not cover visa costs for them. • However, other Trusts will not provide accommodation or visas for the family members at all. • We strongly recommend not to bring your family with you to the UK until you have successfully pass the OSCE. 14. Will my family get free flights to the UK? • No, benefits packages, including free flights are only offered to the employed Nurses and not their families. 15. Will I receive free medical care? • As a resident, you will be entitled to free medical care from the NHS, including access to a GP (doctor), emergency and non-emergency hospital treatment and other services. • You may need to pay for some services, like vaccinations, dental and optical treatment, and prescription medicines. 16. Am I entitled to free NHS treatment? The following NHS treatment is free to anyone: • Treatment in an emergency (but not follow-up treatment) • Treatment of certain communicable disease • Compulsory psychiatric treatment • Family planning services • EEA national students and any accompanying family members should obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in their country of residence. This form entitles the holder and his or her family to full NHS treatment. • Non-EEA nationals and any accompanying family members, will not be entitled to free NHS hospital treatment, except in emergencies. GP’s may agree to treat you for free, but this will usually be limited to urgent treatment that cannot be delayed until you return home. You will have to pay for any other treatment as a private patient. It is therefore very important that you take out medical insurance for the duration of your visit to the UK. If you do not have insurance, private treatment could prove very expensive. • Reciprocal Health Care Agreements The UK has reciprocal health care agreements with the following countries: • Nationals of countries in the European Economic Area • Nationals of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Yugoslavia ,Serbia & Montenegro, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. • Residents of Anguilla, Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Channel Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Iceland, Isle of Man, Montserrat, St Helena, Turks and Caicos Islands. Reciprocal health care agreements will usually cover hospital treatment although you should check with your home country health authority for full details. What expenses will the Trust cover? • Different hospitals will offer varying benefits packages; however, many hospitals will cover the following expenses: • IELTS or OET test • NMC application • Computer-Based Test (CBT) • 2 OSCE Exams • Initial flight ticket • Visa application and health surcharge 18. How much tax will I pay in the UK? • Income tax and national Insurance will be automatically taken from your monthly salary, so the amount of money you take home will be lower. • To work out how much tax will be taken from your salary, you can use an online tax calculator. • As soon as you arrive in the UK, you must apply for a national Insurance Number. This can only be done whilst living in the UK, and we’ll be happy to help you. 19. Will I get a pension? • All NHS employees are automatically enrolled in the NHS Pension Scheme. • 7-9% of your salary will be contributed towards your pension every month and the Trust will make a monthly contribution equal to 14%. • You can opt out of the pension scheme if you don’t wish to be part of it. 20. Will I get holidays? • As full-time employee, you will be entitled to 27 days paid annual leave, plus 8 public Bank Holidays.
